Questions about Crust

While waiting for a fresh-out-of-the-oven slice of pizza from my favorite pizza joint in New York, I noticed something very unsettling. Piled high and toppling out of the trash can were dozens upon dozens of half-gnawed, abandoned pizza crusts. Some crusts–like the ones that had been chewed halfway through and discarded after the eater decided he or she couldn’t stomach it any longer–were sadder to behold than others. As someone who was once the kid who would ask for everyone’s crust on pizza Friday, I was bewildered that it isn’t only elementary-schoolers who abandon perhaps the best part of the pizza. Isn’t it just a piece of bread? Even if it’s not your favorite part of the pie, there are so many ways to incorporate the crust into your delicious pizza-munching experience! I have seen people eat the crust first, saving the cheesy and tomato-ey gooey goodness for last. Or you could cut a piece of the crust from the top and a cheesy bit from the bottom and eat them together. But this is just me trying to save the crust. I’ve digressed. How do you feel about pizza crust? If you don’t like it, why not? (Photo: Romulo Yanes/Gourmet)
